OIL (OSEK Implementation Language) is a language to describe the static configuration of OSEK/VDX operating systems. The current standard is OIL 2.1. In this article the authors describe the motivation behind OIL and they highlight some key features of the OIL 2.1 standard. The authors explain the position of OIL within a tool chain, and they list some differences to previous OIL standards. Further, the authors present an approach to extend OIL to specify distributed systems. The authors call the new extended language System Oil. The new system OIL language includes features to describe the static configuration of the OSEK/VDX COM and NM subsystems. The authors also discuss how the development process can be supported by System OIL. There is an ongoing discussion in the OSEK/OIL working group.
