This paper is concerned with the development of a computer simulation model of an automotive powertrain incorporating a Perbury traction continuously variable transmission (CVT). The model has been developed for use in the design and evaluation of engine/transmission control strategies and the matching of control system and powertrain components. The paper discusses the conceptual and theoretical basis of the powertrain model together with the experimental work necessary to provide data for incorporation into the model. Consideration is given to the computer implementation of the simulation model, specifically in relation to the use of the ACSL high level simulation language embedded within a special purpose computer aided modelling and simulation environment. Finally, the paper includes illustrative results derived from simulation studies and vehicle experiments.
