During braking the displacements of the pilot elements of a vehicle suspension take place and these displacements have a serious influence on the rigidity of a vehicle suspension. The model and experimental researches of these phenomena are presented in the paper. The characteristics of vehicle suspensions were made based on the real vibrations of the sprung and unsprung mass. The tests were carried out on several models of cars having different types of suspensions. During braking with an anti-lock system the displacements of pilot elements of the suspension are changing as a function of the braking moment, so the suspension rigidity is also changing. The variable vertical rigidity has a significant influence on vertical vibration of the vehicle body during braking it moves a resonant area and in some cases causes the striking of suspension elements. The variable torsional rigidity causes the disturbance of the measurement of the rotational speed of the driving wheels. The horizontal rigidity makes the disturbance of the linear velocity of the centre of the driving wheels.
