To optimize the motions, steering and control of a ship a mathematical definition of these activities has to be created. A ship moving in quiet water has six degrees of freedom. A nonlinear mathematical model was designed for vertical and horizontal motions based on two coordinate systems: the motionless bind on the earth and the movable bind on the ship. The model makes possible the analysis of the object motions, the synthesis of the control system and the identification of parameters of ship motions. (Jarc)
