The nature of the contact interface between brake linings and metal opposing surfaces is such that it can not be classified either as a metal-metal or metal-elastomer combination. Wear phenomena associated with brake linings in use reflects wear mechanisms characteristic of both types of interface. Original brake linings wear out by one or a combination of the following mechanisms: 1. Abrasive and micro-cutting wear. 2. Fatigue wear. 3. Macro shear wear. 4. Thermal wear. 5. Adhesive wear. Worn surfaces of moulded asbestos brake linings were examined using SEM, and the different wear mechanisms were identified.
