Caterpillar Tractor Co. has developed two new families of Diesel engines, the 3500 and 3600 Series. The new engines will be used for power generation in applications such as locomotives, off-highway trucks, marine, industrial and electrical power generation systems. A new micro-processor based electronic control has been developed by Caterpillar to meet the application needs of the 3500 Series and other Caterpillar engines. This paper describes the electronic control system and some of the development work for Caterpillar's PEEC (Programmable Electronic Engine Control) speed and load control system for locomotive engines. The Locomotive PEEC system reduces fuel consumption and increases the productivity of locomotives in both main-line and switch yard service.
