History and configuration studies of 1693 truck engine which is 5.4 bore, 4-valve, 6-cyl model with displacement of 893 cu in.; for 1676 engine, four individually ported valves/cylinder were chosen, based on performance of 4-valve 1693 engine and special findings; arrangement improves airflow at high engine speeds and permits precombustion chamber to be centrally mounted over piston for improved combustion efficiency; design goals, development program and constructional details are described; performance curves of engine which features turbocharging and aftercooling, are presented.
