The OMDP has identified unique drilling problems in its conceptual design for drilling 20000 ft (6.1 km) below the seafloor in water depths up to 13200 ft (4 km). Some problem areas identified in this study are casing design methods, fluid hydraulics analysis for well control equipment, clathrates, and temperature effects, which will require changes in cementing materials and techniques. This paper discusses these problems and what must be done to solve them. The solutions to these problems could have direct applications to extending current oil industry technology.
