Conceptual engineering studies have been made of equipment systems requirements to drill a 20000 ft (6.1 km) hole beneath 13200 ft (4 km) of water. The problems inherent in more than doubling the current working depth of dynamically positioned drilling vessels have been addressed. The studies were made under the National Science Foundation's Ocean Margin Drilling Program.
