A procedure for selecting the optimum configuration and stiffness of suspension elements in an inclined conventional powerplant mounting system is described. The automobile powerplant is modelled as a single rigid body having six degrees-of-freedom. This boy is connected to the supporting structure by four elastomeric mounts. The positions and stiffnesses of these mounts which provide an optimum value of an objective function are automatically produced by a computer program. The procedure is efficient and is unique in the choice of design considerations. Aspects which are included in the optimization, either as part of the objective function or as non-linear constraints, are: avoidance of resonance, decoupling of modes, centre of percussion mounting, and cost/production considerations.
