A parametric study of methane adsorption on high surface area carbons and high pore volume zeolites was undertaken to identify those properties which exercise the greatest influence on the storage capacity of an adsorption system. Results indicate that adsorbent systems utilizing activated carbon are better than systems utilizing zeolites both on a gas delivered per unit volume and a gas delivered per unit weight basis. The best results were obtained with high surface area carbons with high packing density. This work tentatively suggests that storage capacities equal to those obtained by compression systems operating at 137 atm (13.9 MPa) can be achieved by adsorption systems operating at pressures below 35 atm (3.6 MPa). The best results observed to date have achieved 70 percent of this goal.
