It was determined that MIL-H-5606 aircraft hydraulic fluid, when contaminated with chlorinated cleaning solvents, can cause corrosion on hydraulic system components. This contamination in C-141 aircraft hydraulic systems was reduced by substituting P-D-680 petroleum distillate solvent for chlorinated cleaning solvents by technical order direction. A system sampling and flushing procedure during periodic depot maintenance (PDM) greatly reduced contamination. Maximum chlorine contamination limits of 55 ppm for new MIL-H-5606 hydraulic fluid and 200 ppm for the same fluid in Air Force aircraft were established. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy as primary and gas liquid chromatography and microcoulometry as acceptable alternates were established as test methods to monitor the chlorine content of MIL-H-5606 aircraft hydraulic fluid.
