Over the years the weight of the stage carriage bus has increased but not proportionally to the passengers carried. This has led to complications of the braking system generally which has not helped with reliability. Attempts to make matters easier for drivers with the fitment of spring brakes has brought its problems. To ease the requirements of the brake lining performance with the fitment of retarders has further increased the complications but eased the number of brake lining changes. The development of systems from servo to air pressure and later hydraulic power showed advantages in reliability, performance and weight, although of late, the increased vehicle weight has brought about changes in system operation which has not quite given the same reliability that was achieved with the Routemaster design. For the future, interesting designs are now appearing which could have a significant effect on recovering energy from braking.
