The paper covers operational experience with air and full power hydraulic braking systems used on public service vehicles. The discussion describes the operating environment and the performance which is required in terms of braking efficiency and fade. The performance of different lining materials is compared and the aspects included are generation of noise, lining life and the variation in relative performance obtained from front and rear axles. Maintenance is discussed and reference is made to ease of inspection, experience with automatic slack adjusters, drum removal, shoe removal, ease of re-riveting linings to shoes, life of actuating mechanism and allowable limits of drum wear. Brief reference is made to early experiences with transmission retarders and to operator views on the potential value of regenerative braking.
