The recent growth in the size and propulsive power of ships has resulted in cases of severe damage to the stern tube bearing which supports the tail shaft and is the most important bearing in a ship. Research into stern gear behaviour has shown that the conventional design approach must be radically revised and that it is no longer acceptable to ignore the static and dynamic interaction between the propeller, tail-shaft and its supports. Deformation of the stern tube bush material and the bearing support must also be allowed for. There is also a lack of knowledge on how the oil film builds up and there is no correct, integrated and tried method of estimating this build up when designing the line shafting and its alignment. The paper discusses the theoretical studies on the oil film build up as well as the dynamic behaviour of the tail shaft in the stern tube taking into account: distortion or bowing of the tail shaft journal under the influence of propeller forces, moments and alignment conditions; sloped boring-out of the white metal bush to match the journal to the bearing surface; influence of the propeller forces and moments which cause skewed misalignment between the journal and the stern tube bush; results indicating correlation between theoretical calculations, measurements taken on a testing rig and onboard a VLCC.
