Studies concerning the application of metal-matrix composites in satellites, for which high stiffness, low expansion, high conductivity, and the absence of moisture absorption and outgassing may be requirements, show material systems composed of continuum-filament fibers in a metal matrix are particularly attractive. Graphite, boron, silicon/carbide, and aluminum/oxide fibers in a matrix of aluminum or magnesium are compared to graphite/epoxy and conventional materials. The system effectiveness of graphite fibers in aluminum and magnesium is shown to be very good in satellite design applications in which thermal/structural distortion or high specific stiffness is a major consideration. Characterization of high modulus graphite fibers in aluminum metal-matrix materials to establish a reliable data base and use of these data in the design of space structures will be discussed. Projections of 48 percent v/o VS0054 (100 million modulus) fiber/Mg, based on test results, show a potential 21 percent specific stiffness improvement compared to beryllium. (Kursetz)
