A study is made of the ability of metal matrix composites to meet the balance of properties required in the construction of aircraft concentrating primarily on isotropic composits based on aluminium alloys reinforced with particulate ceramic. High stiffnesses and strengths can be obtained in tension and compression provided that these materials have been given the appropriate heat treatments. Relatively modest fracture toughness and poor notch sensitivity are founded to be partly offset by exceptionally high fatigue strengths in the composites studies and there appears to be a possibility that tolerance to long fatigue cracks can be obtained by a combination of particulate and fibre reinforcement as demonstrated by fibre reinforced laminates. The metal matrix composites can be shown to produce competitive weight savings in comparison to modern aluminium alloys and organic matrix composites despite their relatively high cost. However, the balance of properties presently obtained may limit the applicability of the composites to selected types of aircraft components such as those critical in terms of stiffness but not damage tolerance, for example.
