In 1965 Qantas Airways based in Sydney Australia introduced Polyurethane paints as a decorative finish and so started the growh of filiform corrosion on Qantas aircraft. The salt laden air from Botany Bay adjacent to the Maintenance Base and the very high humidities when coupled with polyurethane finishes gave the right combination for rapid filiform corrosion growth. Since 1965 other airlines have experienced filiform corrosion, but generally to a lesser extent. The reason for this is unknown as their maintenance bases and operating routes are situated in similar geographical and climatical situations to Qantas. The association between this corrosion and the chemical cleaners and proceses were checked and no difference was found between Qantas and other operators. In this paper we will look at the cause, history, affected areas and maintenance costs associated with filiform corrosion. The development of materials and processes that were required to containt filiform corrosion will be discussed. (DePo)
