This test procedure defines a laboratory procedure for generating and evaluating filiform corrosion on painted aluminum wheels and painted aluminum wheel trim. While this test was developed specifically for the testing of painted aluminum wheels and wheel trim it may be applicable to other components. The application owner will need to assess if this test generates filiform similar to that found in the relevant usage to ensure it will provide accurate data for the application. This test was established based on findings from the literature on filiform corrosion1,2. In the field, wheels and wheel trim have been found with filiform as a typical form of degraded part appearance. Wheels and wheel trim are appearance parts that consumers judge for their cosmetic appeal. This test generates the same type of corrosion in the laboratory that is consistently found in the field. The results of this test can be used to assess part performance versus established field performance and to assess part design, manufacturing process, materials and finishes for their effect on filiform corrosion resistance.
