Components for the interior of future commercial aircraft have to meet the requirements concerning smoke and toxic gas development in the case of fire in order to ensure the passenger's safety. This inevitably results in the application of new materials and construction methods. This contribution includes the examination of smoke density and toxicity as well as of strength and insulation properties of sandwich panels, using fiber-material of rigid foam on the basis of polymetacrylimide(PMI). The test results show that this foam sandwich construction meets the present recommendations with regard to smoke density (NPRM 75-3) and toxicity. Furthermore, these parts combine weight reductions with good insulation properties compared to conventional designs. Realization of this design philosophy was demonstrated by means of a typical interior part, i.e. a sidewall panel. (DePo)
