The dynamic response of a floating beam to a periodical wave motion is studied. It is supposed that the carrying liquid exerts forces proportional to the local elevation relative to the deformed beam according to Archimedes' law. The beam is prismatic. Only deformation due to bending is taken into account. In order to determine the state of deformation and consequently the stresses, especially at resonance frequencies, structural damping is introduced. The aim of the paper is mainly to point out the basic aspects of the important problem of springing of sea-going ships, although the analysis is believed to be directly applicable to large nearly prismatic vessels such as crude carriers. Numerical results for a beam of representative dimensions and properties are given in the last self-contained section of the paper.(Wassmann)
