Supercharging of vehicular diesels, especially turbocharging, has rapidly gained momentum. The question arises as to what degree of supercharging makes economic sense from the standpoint of size, weight, cost, life, performance and sociability. This paper describes and shows the three categories of the supercharged diesel engine with its limitations and capabilities. The third category in the 220 BMEP plus area represents the next challenge to the diesel engine manufacturers. White smoke, emissions, driveability and cold start are some of the problems associated with this category. Engine mechanical integrity, thermal load, complexity and fuel economy are other considerations. Solutions to the above problems will enable engine manufacturers to extend their present engine range as well as plan for an economically viable new engine line in the future. (Buehn)
