A labor-saving system capable of a simultaneous unmanned operation of two or more dump trucks for loading, hauling and transportation in mines or quarries has been developed. In this system, dump trucks equipped with unmanned operation unit can be placed in a programmed operation by the electromagnetic wave signals received from a transmitting system placed on the road side without an operator on board each trucks. This system consists of a steering control, vehicular speed control, dump control and safety devices. We made a performance test and field examination of a Komatsu Model HD320 32-ton capacity off-way dump truck equipped with an unmanned operation unit made by us and confirmed its practical usefulness. In a hauling operation of a dump truck in a supposed quarry, simulation was made on a haulage cost comparison between unmanned and manned operations. As a result, it was revealed that, in operation of 3 or more dump trucks, an unmanned operation under the new system is more profitable or efficient than the conventional manned operation. (Wassmann)
