Description of the commercial use of a unique new lubricant in industrial gear cases and automotive power train applications. The paper gives performance comparison of lubricants containing borate additives vs. conventional sulphur-phosphorous systems. Borate's ability to provide higher load carrying capacity and increased thermal stability are discussed. These performance characteristics are then related to the potential of borate for solving lubricant related problems in unusually high load and shock applications or extended drain intervals under high heat conditions. In addition, reduced friction characteristics were observed that provide cooler operating temperatures, reduced power equirements, and indications of energy savings in geared power transmission applications.
