To ensure the smooth operating of spiral bevel gears, the deflections at the tooth contact points, which should be kept as low as possible, must be determined precisely. These deflections depend on such factors as torque transmitted, bearing pre-loads, rigidity of the casings and shafts complete with bearing spacers, spacing between bearings, location of the external load, misalignment of bearings and crowning of the rollers or tracks in rolling element bearings. In addition to these factors, the paper describes how the influence of misalignment between the bearing races, shaft, casing and spacer deformations along with all the elements of elastic deformations in the bearings, are taken into account in a study to calculate the deflection components of the points of contact of the meshing gear teeth.
