Availability of a suitable propulsion system is generally acknowledged to be a key requirement for the successful development of a new airplane. In order to evaluate the suitability of a propulsion system, it is necessary to be able to calculate both the steady state and transient performance of the engine throughout the flight regime. In addition, installation effects on thrust and specific fuel consumption must be accounted for as well as engine weight, dimensions, and cost. This paper discusses the availability throughout the government and industry of analytical methods for calculating these quantities. (Peters)
