A substantial portion of mechanical energy generated in the engine of an automobile is lost as friction in the engine, transmission and hypoid gearing. An analysis of the types of lubrication involved indicates that hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic (EHD) and boundary lubrication exist in the engine while EHD and boundary lubrication are more typical of the transmission and hypoid gearing. The advantages of using superrefined mineral oils, synthetic hydrocarbons and esters coupled with polymeric viscosity-index improvers to produce fluids with improved viscosimetrics are discussed. The importance of boundary lubrication in hot engine tests indicates a need for improved additives to lower boundary friction in automotive lubricants. The effect of surface-active additives already present in automotive lubricants increases the challenge in developing an additional additive to operate in this competitive environment. Achievement of optimal viscosimetrics and boundary friction in automotive lubricants would result in substantial savings of energy derived from oil. (Kursetz)
