Description of the problems encounered in using manual gearbox vehicles designed for line haulage in short-haul work, in an urban environment. These include short component life, excessive down time and driver fatigue, and are traced back to poor matching of engine and transmission at the design stage. Automatic transmission could solve these, but also must meet other criteria, and give an economic overlife performance. The results or comparative tests of similar vehicles with manual and automatic transmissions are given, and the conclusion drawn that automatic transmission can be justified on commercial vehicles, other than those engaged on continual motorway haulage.
