Brief history of layshaft gearboxes indicating how efforts have been made to reduce weight and how this has been achieved by the incorporation of a range change and later by use of twin layshafts. The current state of the art shows how efforts are now being concentrated upon ease of gear changing with special reference to the Snapper principle. Detailed explanation of the Snapper development and it's potential for semi and fully automatic operation. Discussion whether or not fully automatic operation is an essential or whether this is really a misnomer for 'easier gear changing' which most drivers now request. The future of the layshaft gearbox - how does it's efficiency compare with non-layshaft automatics? Is it more flexible so far as gear ratios are concerned? Can it be quietened to meet proposed pending noise legislation? Does it have a future? (Wassmann)
