In response to the needs of the operators of the long (1000-foot) Great Lakes bulk carriers for ship-board guidance to avoid overstraining the hull girder by improper cargo loading, ballast conditions, and/or wave loadings, a hull stress monitoring system has been developed. The system comprises analog sensors and digital computing, control, display und guidance components. Measurements of bending stresses at five stations, hatch corner stresses at two locations, lateral acceleration in the pilot house, and vertical accelerations at the bow are included in the system. Wave bending and springing stresses are separately displayed in the proposed system. Detailed design characteristics are specified and a test and evaluation plan for one or more trial installations is described. (Peters)
