This report (1) describes measures and public policies for conserving energy used by automobiles; (2) presents econometric measures of the demand for highway motor fuel and gasoline, with particular attention to the response of gasoline use to changes in its price; and (3) considers both long-run and short-run (the period during which the size and characteristics of the automobile stock remain relatively constant) responses. Related research results are summarized and compared with this study's results.
