During the last five years electronics in the motor car has advanced from the cassette radio to uses in such functions as lighting and carburation control. The environment in which the components operate can be quite harsh - for instance, with voltages of 6 volts when starting a car from cold to 24 volts when a start is battery assisted, and within a temperature range of - 40 C to +150 C. Devices must also be unaffected by high energy transients. Components manufactured by SGS include devices for use as voltage regulators, in alternator and lighting control, electronic injection and various auxiliary functions such as liquid level alarms for fuel and oil supplies. Block diagrams for these various functions are given. The basic construction and operation of the bipolar device on which the components are based are also described.
