Addresses passive underwater target depth tracking of maneuvering targets in the vertical ocean plane. A state estimator has been developed and extensively tested to track a target which makes random depth variations. The algorithm processes noisy, passive sonar measurements of bottom/direct and surface/direct multipath time delays. The depth tracker utilizes a nonlinear prefilter to first linearize and then process these measurements. The advantages are twofold: (1) it partially decouples the range and depth estimators, considerably reducing the computation; and (2) it eliminates the use of all extended Kalman filters with their associated divergence problems. Instead, a conventional Kalman-Singer filter is used following the nonlinear signal processor, resulting in a robust tracker with a significant decrease in the complexity of the total algorithm. The cost that one pays is that the processed measurements contain nonstationary and non-Gaussian measurement errors.
