Attractive higher voltage Ni/H2 batteries for satellite power supply can be constructed by connecting several unit cell stacks in series within a common pressure vessel. The practical implementation of this concept requires the complete elimination of electrolyte shunts between unit stacks. To achieve this a battery design was developed using non-sealing, hydrophobic, thin wall envelopes around each unit stack. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated by construction and testing of prototype batteries of about 50 Wh, containing up to five unit stacks in series. The batteries successfully completed up to 7000 cycles of a near earth orbit tests with deep discharge.
