Department of defense computer systems programs provide some interesting contrasts. On the one hand, system requirements frequently lead the current state-of-the art in commercial computers. On the other hand, computers selected at DOD project initiation are almost invariably behind the state-of-the art of commerically available products by the time the system becomes operational, two to 10 years later. If the system is strictly MIL-SPEC, it quickly falls even further behind the state-of-the art of the rapidly evolving commercial hardware and software. The article describes the practical issue of integrating computer technology into tactical systems.
