If it comes off, the idea of building a three-phase induction motor inside a hollow axle promises important economies in weight, cost and maintenance. In collaboration with British Rail's R&D Division, GEC Traction Ltd. has manufactured four tubular-axle induction motors (TAIM). A pair are being fitted experimentally to a train for on-track tests during which they will be directly compared with axle-hung three-phase induction motors, as well as with DC series motors. The configuration has changed since the first TAIM appeared in 1977 in that the main bearings are now inside the wheel hub. Possible developments are elimination of forced cooling and the use of a plain steel tube as both axle and rotor.
