Fears about the adverse effect on vital signalling circuits of ac components impressed upon the dc traction supply by choppers have sometimes inhibited their introduction. Interference mechanisms are now well understood, and it should be possible to write a specification which satisfies the signal engineer without pushing up the price of equipment on the train excessively. Tests carried out by London Transport confirm that the solution lies in specifying an adequate input filter, together with fail-safe control and monitoring of frequencies generated by the chopper.
