The authors describe and analyse a passive lightweight secondary magnetic damping scheme for superconducting Maglev vehicles in which aluminium damper coils are mounted rigidly to the underside of the passenger compartment and are electromagnetically coupled to the levitation magnet on the primary. Dissipative currents in the coils due to a time dependent flux linkage produced by relative motion of the passenger compartment and the magnets can produce a damping factor of 1 sec-1 by suitable design. The advantages of this scheme are discussed.
