To meet the stringent requirements imposed on submarine cable repeaters, novel mica capacitors of high precision and reliability were designed. Mica sheets were Au-electroded and were made in contact with each other by compression; the lead terminals were gold foils and Au-plated copper plates. In the design the excellent dielectric property of mica was taken into account and the moulding was removed. The stray capacitance was reduced as much as possible because it lessens the stability of capacitance. The mica capacitor thus fabricated has initial capacitance scatter less than +or-0.25% and its variation of capacitance in 20 years is estimated to be within 0.1%. As a result of 108 parts-hour tests the estimated trouble rate is less than 0.1 FIT. This type of capacitor is superior to silvered-mica capacitors as far as temperature coefficient, dielectric loss and stability are concerned.
