OCC-22S's well known '3-divided steel segments' structure, which offers the advantages of high pressure resistance, low torque and deep water applicability, has been successfully proven with a cumulative length supply record of more than 140,000 kilometers of in-service cables. A new cable has been developed, the OCC-SC300 series, featuring a loose tube structure combined with the proven benefits of OCC-22S cable's 3-divided steel segments design. Optical fibers are directly cabled into the steel tube formed by the 3-divided segments. A shallow sea trial was conducted in February 2004 off the East coast of Amami-Oshima island. The test cable configuration consisted of DA(double armored), SAM, SAL(single armored light) and LWS sections and the relative cable transitions for confirming the deployment and recoverability in water depths from approximately 700 m (DA) to a maximum of 2.800 m (SAL), taking into account much deeper deployment/recovery applicability for each cable type in comparison with the current cable types. The newly developed OCC-SC300 cable and related cable joint series are available as a more reliable line-up with greater strength and lighter weight when compared with OCC's previous products.
