In 1980 Hella started with the first microcomputer applications for motor vehicles in production. This memory capacity was sufficient until 1983. A tremendous need in case of memory capacity was necessary beginning with 1984 where more complex electronics in car applications was required. Nowadays the average memory request is near 5 KByte with a progressive tendency. Running parallel to this development mentioned above great demands on software are determining the design period since first prototypes are working - today more than 70 % of design capacity for complex units must be provided for computer programs. The selection of electronic components for application in a motor vehicle has to be made very carefully. Considerably higher technical requirements of the components as compared with the consumer goods - or office machinery electronics have to be encountered due to the use in climatically changing environments. ISO - Paper Nr.: ISO/DIS 914 - describes procedure and format for diagnostic application in motor car vehicles; in the mean time a great number of european car manufacturers follow the ISO recommendations. Sensors, actuators and the controller itself are checked when the diagnostic routine is initiated. This check can be done on service request only or at every start automatically.
