This paper provides an update on the direction of the Consolidated Automated Support System (CASS) program. A brief background review provides an earlier recognition of the interrelationship of automatic test equipment availability/supportability and weapon system availability. The expansion of the CASS program scope to include other Navy systems commands' test requirements has forced the Navy to revisit and redefine CASS both as a total system, and most importantly, the supportability of that system. By looking at the total Navy support requirement from a slightly different view, subtle but significant changes in program objectives have given rise to future implications of how we acquire and field not only CASS but our weapon systems as well.
