Successful implementation of the technological developments of the next decade will be predicted on achieving higher levels of system integration to support projected operating needs. The traditional subsystem design process will not result in the optimization of the system level design because integration of the system is a by-product of this process, not a design driver. Optimization of system design is a function of quantitative analysis of performance and support issues with respect to the system requirements. Support issues include reliability/maintainability/availability (RMA), logistics and cost factors. Integration of analysis tools from these traditionally separate disciplines is required in order to comprehensively tradeoff the design decision criteria. This requires computerized models capable of assessing these factors, to perform tradeoffs among candidate designs. To be most effective, the methodology must be implemented in the early stages of the design and used throughout the design process. This paper describes the systems engineering approach, models used in the design analysis and program organizational aspects of design for supportability.
