As part of the Cockpit Automation Technology Program, a methodology was demonstrated to: specify the maximum task completion times in tactical aircraft, identify critical events, and estimate whether pilots can perform the tasks required within the time constraints of each event. The time constraints and performance conditions (i.e., aircraft status, terrain characteristics, and weather conditions) are derived using the MPIRE series of mission models which generate a mission timeline complete with RED and BLUE tactical events. Mission analysts then identify those events which could result in: destruction of the aircraft (e.g., SAM launch), severe injury to or death of the aircrew (e.g., sustained high g), or noncompletion of the mission (e.g., excessive fuel usage). Concentrating design evaluation on critical events minimizes analysis time and maximizes the expected payoff. The completion times during these events are then estimated using the Human Utilization Model Analytic Network (HUMAN). The HUMAN estimates are then compared with the time constraints derived in Step 1. Tasks not completed with the time constraints are identified and the crewstation designs supporting these tasks modified. HUMAN is then used again to evaluate the modified crewstation design, times.
