This paper has outlined some of the possible applications of a simulation program, which evaluates p edestrian and vehicle delays at free standing Pelican crossings. Clearly safety, rather than delay, is the main consideration when determining the type of installation and operating procedure of such crossings. However, there is usually still a requirement to balance the competing demands of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. In some instances, by the appropriate choice of corssing type, mode of operation, and signal timings, it is possible to provide a significantly improved level of service for pedestrians, without seriously increasing vehicle delay.
