With any new technique comes the inevitable urge to apply it. Speech recognition and synthesis are rapidly maturing as viable techniques and many people are starting to assume that we will soon be talking to computers as a matter of routine. Building on the results of the demonstrator, we are reworking the hardware and software to produce a much cheaper and more compact unit with greater inbuilt flexibility. In the process, we are upgrading the speech recogniser by using a more recent model which should remove many limitations, and making far more use of the knowledge in the application database. The unit is internally more modular, decoupling the dialogue engine proper from the application data areas, and the simulator and device interfaces. This will permit ready adaptation to accommodate better recognisers, to work with different simulator systems, or even in non ATC applications.
