The phenomenon of adhesion between wheel and rail has been known, for a long time, to be extremely complex and swiftly changing. The advent of advanced electronic equipment and more recently the microprocessor, has allowed the development of algorithms which can interpret wheel/rail conditions in real time and effect real time control of the brake system to optimize stopping distance by controlled release of the brakes when adhesion is insufficient to sustain the brake rate demanded. The paper examines the fundamental phenomena and defines the algorithms which are used in a practical microprocessor based system to interpret wheel slip events and optimize stopping distance. The microprocessors self diagnosis capability and failure information storage are addressed together with a brief outline of: programming methods to limit programming and compiler errors, results of vehicle testing.
