As future spacecraft power needs become better defined it becomes increasingly obvious that the availability of mass efficient energy storage technology will be a key factor in the realization of those future spacecraft concepts. This need for advanced electrochemical energy storage was recognized some time ago, and development programs designed to meet many of these needs are in place. Projected missions may be grouped generically, and these generic missions may be equated to specific electrochemical energy storage technologies. The characteristics of the generic missions and the status of the various electrochemical energy storage technologies are the topic of the following discussion.
