Two concepts, the Space Platform (SP) and the Space Operation Center (SOC), have evolved. Both designs emphasize permanent presence in space and require power systems that will start with several kilowatts and grow beyond the 100 kW range. The extension of near-term energy storage technology to meet large power system requirements for the long term is undergoing evaluation. Selection of an electrochemical system will have to include consideration of its ultimate capability, noting that only about 20 % of its theoretical energy density will be available for use. Further emphasis will have to be given to the use of advanced cell types in space applications. The fuel cell-electrolysis cell system appears to be promising in view of manned related activities. Mechanical energy storage is growing in interest and may be the dark horse candidate. Hybrid combinations of the storage systems described are also viable possibilities and may help the alleviate individual system shortcomings.
