A decision was made by the British Columbia Railway, in May 1982, to electrify the Tumbler Ridge Branch Line. This new railway, 130 milometres long, ties the coal mines of the North East Coal Block in the northeast of British Columbia into the existing BCR network. After a review of the results of the feasibility studies leading to the route selection, the paper describes the topography, the long tunnels and the problems of tunnel ventilation which contributed to the decision to electrify. The choice of catenary voltage is discussed in relation to the tonnage to be hauled, the lack of existing transmission facilities along the route and the prospects of future main line railway electrification in Canada. The overhead contact system is described including the choice of wire sizes, catenary masts and mast foundations. The main characteristics of the General Motors GF6C locomotives to be used on the line are also given.
